Nonie & Bill Sheel
Wild is the word Nonie would use to describe her garden story. The gardens however are so much more than what one word can convey. They offer a potpourri of color, surprise and serenity in a woodland setting.
Begin your tour to the west side of the home where it becomes evident that children are frequent visitors to the gardens. A small hideaway decorated with bones competes with a cloistered garden directly across, also enhanced with a few bones. Continue to the back where you will come to Nonie and Bill’s favorite seating area. Try out the chairs which the family brought back from Belize years ago.
As you move to the back yard, you will be drawn first to a secret garden where grandchildren share special moments with Nonie and Bill. A panoramic view of the yard, provides striking color and movement from hollyhocks which clearly thrive in this setting. Ground cover throughout provides a cooling carpet of green lamium, vinca and violets, with pops of color from primrose. Pergolas draped with clematis, Virginia creeper, wisteria, grapes and bittersweet invite guests to sit a spell and take in the splendor of the surrounding. It is easy to envision wedding guests celebrating here in a few weeks.
Before proceeding through the backyard, head west and follow the path to raised garden beds, where Bill enjoys tending vegetables. When you return to the back yard a perennial bed in the back will delight with a mixture of daylilies, yarrow, mums, and sedum embraced with a large hydrangea and lupine. Horseradish plants and rhubarb provide a backdrop while hollyhock wave from the pasture in back.
Clematis, phlox and a chocolate vine adorn the deck at the back of the home. Stop at the money tree, a wild cherry with angels swirling in the breeze. Make a donation to the Poudre Learning Center here and Nonie and Bill will double the amount of money donated by visitors.
Before you leave, take notice of the three mock orange that embrace the front of the home. Nonie hopes you feel the joy and spirit evident in these gardens.
